Brian Somerville

I sculpt beasts.

This cast of original characters emanate from their own whimsical mythologies. Layered with playful interactivity, subtle humor and personal symbolism my narrative creatures explore contemporary social and cultural issues and confront the

beast within us all.

The Weight of a Whisper

It must have been a whisper.

Perhaps the voice of one.

Questioning procedure

Of how things all were done.

It grew through generations.

From seeds of thoughts to trees.

To a forest on an island

drowning in the sea.

Some saw it as a threat.

To break a fractured nation.

Some did next to nothing.

Some drank it like salvation.

This activist for progress.

On predator rides prey.

A monument devoted

To what meek voices say.

I'm Falling here, As Are You

I am broken.

This you knew.

I tried to fix me.

You did too.

I stoked this fire and it grew.

Green and Red sometimes makes blue.

We traded foresight for this view.

I'm falling here, as are you.

To Tame a Beast

Could a beast be tamed?

To work or fight or die.

Giving up on hopes and dreams

Without pause to ask why.

Would a beast be tamed?

Through rules and laws and shame.

A life of sticks and carrots,

A rigged eternal game.

Should a beast be tamed?

To hit hits cues on stage.

To bury every instinct

Content inside a cage.

This beast was never tamed.

The wild won't leave its head.

And when their chains all rust away,

This beast tames you instead.

Shell-Shocked

"Get your shelled ass moving!"

Barked the wild hare to its ride.

As the tortoise slowed its pace,

And raced on till it died.

BARNSTORMER

It flew with wings of bolts and bones

Above the fog from coal.

It saw the sky was falling down

And did not tell a soul.

The Swashbuckler

Start this day guns a blazin.

Sail steadfast towards the sun.

With seven seas to explore,

Don't anchor in just one.

The Visionary

Building castles in your dreams

Are fantasies worth keeping.

Steal your passion from the moon

And stack bricks when not sleeping.

The Suit

Composing empires all your life

Remains a noble goal.

Still, obligations signed in ink

Should not involve your soul.
